Click Open Disk Cleanup to delete unnecessary files on your hard disk, thereby increasing storage space. Click Adjust Power Settings to improve your computer’s efficiency by adjusting its power settings. Click here to adjust indexing options in order to improve Windows’ search functionality. Click Adjust Visual Effects to change how menus and windows appear to optimize performance. Click Manage Startup Programs to limit the number of programs that launch at system startup, thereby speeding the startup process. To view more information about your computer’s hardware, click View and Print Details. If, after installing new hardware, you want to see whether the score has changed, click Update My Score. View the sub-scores for each component here. The Performance Information and Tools window opens. If your base score is insufficient for the types of programs you want to run, you can upgrade your hardware components to determine which components need upgrading, view their sub-scores.ġ In Control Panel, click System and Maintenance.Ģ Click Performance Information and Tools. 
Windows then uses the lowest sub-score to establish your system’s base score. To determine the base score, Windows evaluates your PC’s RAM, CPU, hard drive, and graphics capabilities, giving each a sub-score. In contrast, a computer with a base score of 4 or 5 can support programs using high-end graphics, 3D gaming, or even HDTV. For example, a computer whose base score is 2 or lower can handle general tasks such as word processing or Internet searching, but not more complex programs such as some games. The base score is meant to help users determine what types of software their PC can handle, with higher scores denoting increased performance. Windows Vista’s Performance Information and Tools window lists your computer’s Windows Experience Index base score, which gauges the performance and overall capability of your computer’s hardware configuration.
